Orioles minors recap 7/22: Rain washes away all but a Norfolk win

The Tides were the only Orioles affiliate that got to play on Saturday. David Hess pitched well on the way to a win.

Norfolk Tides 5, Rochester (Twins) 3

The Tides picked up three runs in the first inning and never trailed in the game on the way to a win. Shortstop Luis Sardinas had a three-hit game, driving in two of the five Norfolk runs. He also committed an error that led to a pair of unearned runs. Oops.

New O’s minor leaguer Breyvic Valera played second base and was 0-4 with a walk. DJ Stewart was on base twice, scoring runs after both getting a hit and a walk. Cedric Mullins also was 1-4 with a walk. The O’s need to figure out a way to trade Adam Jones so they can get some MLB playing time for this guy.

Erstwhile Oriole David Hess pitched brilliantly for the Tides, holding the Red Wings scoreless in the seven innings he pitched. Hess struck out nine while allowing two hits and three walks. Hey, that’s pretty good. He has a 3.15 ERA in his Norfolk games.

And that’s it from the O’s US-based farm teams on Saturday. Everybody else got rained out, all the way down to the Gulf Coast League Orioles. You can find the complete box score from this Norfolk game here.
