After losing game one of the doubleheader against the Yankees by a score of 10-3, the Orioles will send right-hander Andrew Cashner to the mound in an effort to salvage a split. He has a 7.48 ERA in four starts this month. Brett Gardner and Giancarlo Stanton happen to be hitting first and second for the Yankees in the nightcap, but neither has had much success in their career against Cashner. Stanton is carrying an .067 average in 15 at-bats and Gardner, the Oriole killer, is hitting only .235 in 17 at-bats.
The Yankees will counter with Sonny Gray, whose last four appearances have come out of the bullpen. Over that timespan, he has allowed three earned runs in 9.1 innings. The last time he started a game was against the Orioles on August 1, and he allowed seven runs over 2.2 innings. In terms of matchups, a couple of Orioles have solid career numbers against Gray. Caleb Joseph is hitting .429 in 14 at-bats and Trey Mancini is hitting .364 in 11 at-bats.
Tim Beckham will take a seat for game two despite having a .381 average and two home runs in 21 career at-bats against Grey. Beckham will be replaced at shortstop by Jonathan Villar while Jace Peterson slots in at second base. Adam Jones, who also started game one, will be replaced in right field by Craig Gentry.
