Orioles minor league recap (8/7): Gray Fenter wins in Aberdeen

Aberdeen beat Staten Island behind a strong start from Gray Fenter. It was a slow night on the farm, but it’s always a plus when a team named the Yankees goes down.

Aberdeen was the only Orioles affiliate in action last night, and they made sure Baltimore’s farm teams went undefeated. The IronBirds scored the first three, and held off a ninth-inning rally to clinch a 5-3 victory.

Gray Fenter pitched the first five innings for Aberdeen and picked up his third win of the season. Fenter (3-3) allowed only one run on four hits. The lone run came via a solo home run in the third inning. Fenter struck out five and walked two batters. The 22-year-old missed all of 2016 due to Tommy John surgery. He’s struggled at times this season, and currently holds a 5.21 ERA.

Robbie Thorburn led off the first inning with a double and scored on another double by Cody Roberts. Robert Neustrom plated Roberts with a two-out single to right field. Adam Hall led off the second with a double, and he eventually came around to score on a single by Alfredo Gonzalez.

Roberts and Neustrom both doubled in the fifth, resulting in the IronBirds fourth run of the game. J. C. Escarra notched a two-out RBI single that resulted in Aberdeen’s final run of the contest.
