We’ve known for a while that this day would come, but it’s finally here. The Orioles will take the field this afternoon with an opportunity to tie the club record for most losses in a season. The 1988 team lost 107 games after starting 0-21. It is only fitting that the 2018 Orioles eventually take their rightful place as the worst O’s team ever.
David Hess will get the start today and try to make sure that this team doesn’t tie that record of futility on his watch. He returns to the rotation after injuries have pushed back Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner’s starts. I’m pleased to see him get another start because he was going in the right direction before moving to the bullpen. His ERA stood at 6.41 after a bad August 3 start against Texas. It is now 5.17. The last time he pitched at Camden Yards, he threw six scoreless innings against Toronto.
There aren’t any big surprises in the Orioles lineup as they try not to get swept by the White Sox. The middle infield shuffle consists of Jonathan Villar at shortstop and Breyvic Valera at second base today. DJ Stewart is starting at designated hitter, clearing a spot in left field for Joey Rickard. Trey Mancini is at first base and Chris Davis gets the day off. Chance Sisco is behind the plate.
This lineup will face off against Lucas Giolito, who brings a 5.76 ERA into the game. He matched up against the Orioles on May 24 and allowed seven runs without getting through two innings. After last night’s shutout, that would be fun today.
