Norfolk Tides 6, Gwinnett Stripers 0
Gabriel Ynoa had quite a night to kick off his 2019 season. The right-hander no-hit the Gwinnett Stripers through five innings before being removed with a pitch count of 76. He struck out seven batters in those five innings and walked two.
Unfortunately, the Tides bullpen was unable to preserve the no-hitter. But they were able to preserve the shutout. Norfolk reliever Evan Phillips gave up a hit to the first batter he saw in the sixth, but he combined with Branden Kline and Luis Gonzalez to shut down the Stripers for the final four innings of the game.
On offense, Christopher Bostick hit his first long ball of the season, a solo shot, and went 2-for-3 on the night. Third baseman Stevie Wilkerson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ryan Mountcastle, playing first base, went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Everyone in the Tides lineup, except for Mason Williams and DJ Stewart, had at least one hit.
Delmarva Shorebirds 3, Lexington Legends 0
Right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez was the Orioles’ first round draft pick in 2018. He pitched 19.1 innings last year in the Gulf Coast League, putting up a 1.40 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 20 strikeouts. Rodriguez was superb last night in his debut with Delmarva, throwing five shutout innings while only allowing two hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.
The Shorebirds put a pair of runs on the board in the second on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout. They tacked on another run in the sixth on a solo home run by Robert Neustrom. That was the extent of the scoring for both teams all night.
The first three hitters in Delmarva’s lineup — Adam Hall, Cadyn Grenier, and JC Encarnacion — combined to go 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts and two walks. The previously mentioned Robert Neustrom led the team with a pair of hits in four at-bats and catcher Daniel Fajardo was also 2-for-4.
