Coming off a disastrous road trip, Baltimore looks to Andrew Cashner to play the stopper yet again and hopes the bats wake up against the Yankees’ J.A. Happ.

The Yankees have come to town, and wouldn’t it be swell if the Orioles’ slumbering bats chose this as the moment to wake up?

As Harrison Jozwiak pointed out in his series preview, this series is shaping up to be a David vs. Goliath kind of deal for the Orioles, who are limping their way into the homestand with a 2-8 record in their last 10 games.

The two teams have already met up eight times this young season, and, after unexpectedly taking the first series in New York, it hasn’t been pretty for the Orioles: they’re 2-6 against NY with a -23 run differential. Here’s an even uglier number: Baltimore’s total run differential on the season is -95.

The Orioles have had some success against Yankees lefty J.A. Happ this season, scoring nine runs off of him in 13.2 innings. Trey Mancini has a .320 career average against Happ with three home runs in 25 at-bats. Renato Núñez is .467 lifetime with three homers in 15 trips to the plate against him, and Dwight Smith Jr. has hit .286 in seven plate appearances.

PItching has been the Achilles heel of this team all season, but Cashner has been a rock in the rotation, pitching to a 3.76 ERA in his last seven starts. In his other two starts against New York this season Cashner has taken a loss, but considering that last week, the righty gave up just two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings while O’s bats made the sound of crickets, it’s not a crazy idea to hope Cashner can keep his team in the game.

The odds this series are, frankly, stacked against the Orioles, but tonight’s matchup might be their best chance to come away with a win.
