Memorial Day Orioles game thread: vs. Tigers, 1:05

On this holiday, enjoy some afternoon baseball between two of the worst teams in the majors.

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles
Gabriel Ynoa is making his first start in two years. Good luck!

Only four days after leaving Baltimore, the O’s are back in town following a mentally exhausting and mostly painful trek to Colorado, where they suffered bullpen collapses galore in a series loss.

The Orioles will hope to get back on track against a fellow woeful team, the Tigers, one of only four clubs that hasn’t yet won 20 games (along with the O’s, Royals, and Marlins). It kicks off a six-game homestand that will also feature another underperforming club, the Giants, so maybe the Birds can actually win a few games this week.

With Dan Straily booted to the bullpen, Gabriel Ynoa will toe the rubber for his first start since 2017, and the eighth of his career. If you’re hoping for a long outing, I have bad news for you: in six of his seven previous starts, Ynoa hasn’t lasted even five innings. The one exception was, well, exceptional; Ynoa twirled an eight-inning gem against the Rays on Sept. 21, 2017, holding them to one run.

Still, expect the Orioles to have to cycle through a number of pitchers this afternoon, which is probably why they’re still carrying a 14-man pitching staff and only two bench players instead of calling up DJ Stewart already. #freedj
