You would be forgiven if you had never heard of Tom Eshelman until this moment. The right-handed pitcher was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization up until a month ago, when the O’s nabbed him in exchange for international signing bonus money. Since then, he has been plying away with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, where he has amassed a 4.05 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 20 innings.
Here’s a quick Eshelman primer:
-He’s 25 years old.
-He was a second-round pick by the Astros back in 2015.
-He went to Cal State Fullerton for college.
-He owns a 4.17 career ERA in the minors over 496 total innings.
-He’s not gonna rack up the strikeouts, but may be able to give the O’s some much needed length out of the rotation.
-He’s likely headed right back to Norfolk after the game.
Eshelman could be a frequent rider of the Norfolk shuttle for the remainder of the season. In a best case scenario, he looks solid and makes more than just a few spot starts. A guy can dream!
