Orioles minor league recap 8/13: Aberdeen tosses a combined no-hitter

Jake Lyons, James Ryan and Kyle Martin combined for the first no-hitter in IronBirds history.

MLB: Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

West Virginia Power (Mariners) 4, Delmarva Shorebirds 2

Delmarva kept the Power off the scoreboard through the first six innings, but West Virginia broke out with four runs in the seventh. Neither team scored again, and Delmarva fell 4-2.

Delmarva starter Hector Guance tossed six scoreless innings before catching a tough break in the seventh. After striking out the leadoff hitter, Guance watched Onil Pena reach on an error. Guance allowed a single, but recorded the second out before being pulled for Ruben Garcia.

Garcia allowed both inherited runners to score, and surrendered two more himself. He gave up back-to-back singles to even the score, and allowed a two-run double before the inning ended.

Johnny Rizer drove in JC Encarnacion to get the Shorebirds on the board, and Nick Horvath added the other run with a solo shot in the fifth. Both teams recorded eight hits apiece, and Adam Hall (2-3) was the only Shorebirds player with more than one hit.

Aberdeen Ironbirds 7, Vermont Lake Monsters (Athletics) 0

Jake Lyons pitched five hitless innings, James Ryan followed with three more, and Kyle Martin tossed one of his own to complete a combined no-hitter for the IronBirds. Meanwhile, Aberdeen tallied 13 base hits in a dominant, 7-0 victory over Vermont.

The Orioles selected Lyons in the 22nd round of the 2019 draft. He had appeared in nine games prior to last night, and started only two games before this one. Lyons held an 0-3 record and 4.24 ERA through 17 innings. He’s no longer winless. Lyons walked just one and struck out five.

Ryan signed with the Orioles as an undrafted free agent back in June. Ryan struggled as a senior at the University of Saint Katherine in California, but he had his stuff working tonight. Ryan struck out two, and did not walk a batter.

The Orioles selected Martin in the 15th round of the 2019 draft. The 21-year-old put an exclamation point on the no-no by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Last night marked the first no-hitter in Aberdeen’s history.
