Orioles minor league recap 8/17: Cody Sedlock continues his strong bounce-back season

A couple of affiliates got rained out on Friday night, but the Baysox and Shorebirds emerged victorious from their respective games while the Keys weren’t so lucky.

Bowie Baysox 6, Altoona Curve 2

The Baysox lineup tallied 13 hits and six runs on Friday night, which was more than enough to deliver a win, along with Cody Sedlock’s strong start. The young right-hander went five innings, allowing one run on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 2.95. He’s having a true bounce-back season after putting up a 5.11 ERA in 2018.

In the first inning Bowie jumped out to an early lead that they would never relinquish. Carlos Perez had an RBI single to score the first run of the night. The Baysox scored two more on a Zach Jarrett single in the fourth, added solo home runs in the sixth and the seventh, then an RBI single in the ninth for good measure.

Cedric Mullins went 2-for-4 on the night with his 15th steal, two runs scored and a solo home run. Perez was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Willy Yahn also had three hits in the game while Jarrett had a pair.

Fayetteville Woodpeckers 5, Frederick Keys 2

Frederick lost by a slim margin last night, unable to muster enough offense to support a stellar start from Brenan Hanifee. The right-hander went six strong innings, giving up three hits, one run, three walks and eight strikeouts. He also allowed one homer — a solo shot in the sixth.

The Keys offense was 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving an astonishing 11 men on base. They even showed some patience at the plate by walking six times as a team, but it was not enough to spark a big offensive output.

Jean Carrillo went 1-for-2 and was responsible for the Keys’ only runs of the game. He had a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. JC Escarra went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Cadyn Grenier was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.

Delmarva Shorebirds 5, Lakewood BlueClaws 0

Seeking to limit the innings on Grayson Rodriguez’s arm, the Shorebirds sent him to the mound for a brief start that went quite well. He threw three perfect innings, putting up six strikeouts along the way. His ERA is now 2.59. Nick Vespi and Ruben Garcia followed with a combined six scoreless innings. The Delmarva pitching staff as a whole registered 16 strikeouts on the night and only two walks.

A trio of solo home runs powered the offense, while Seamus Curran had an RBI ground out and Cody Roberts had an RBI single. The homers came courtesy of JC Encarnacion (1-for-5), Johnny Rizer (1-for-4) and Nick Horvath (1-for-4). Roberts and Adam Hall each contributed two hits on the night as well.
