Monday Bird Droppings: Where the Orioles are home again

Happy Monday, Camden Chatters. Did you watch any baseball this weekend? Was it good? It was? Then you obviously weren’t watching the Orioles. They were swept by the Red Sox, which is bad enough. But they also blew a 6-0 lead yesterday and allowed the Red Sox to score 13 unanswered runs. I mean, I know they’re bad. But come on. Do they have to be THAT bad?

Our beloved O’s are back home after their 0-7 road trip to face a team against whom they might be a bit more evenly matched: the Kansas City Royals. The Royals would be a last-place team if the Detroit Tigers didn’t exist. The Orioles are looking up at the Royals in the overall MLB standings, but don’t worry. Even if the Orioles manage to sweep the Royals (they won’t), they’ll still be two games worse than the Royals.

Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have so many Orioles birthday buddies! Seriously, just so many. But one of them stands above the rest and that is J.J. Hardy. The former Oriole turns 37 years old today. Hardy played shortstop for the O’s from 2011-2017, earning three gold gloves, a silver slugger, and making one all star appearance. He is also extremely handsome. Happy birthday, J.J.!

It’s also the birthday of Lance Cormier (39), who appeared in 45 games for the 2008 Orioles; Rocky Cherry (40), who pitched in 28 games for the 2007-08 team; Luis DeLeon (61), who played for the 1987 team; Paul Mitchell (70), who was on the 1975 team and not creating hair styling products to my knowledge; Jim Lehew, (b. 1937, d. 2016), whose entire major league career was eight games with the Orioles from 1961-62; and Jim Finigan (b. 1928, d. 1981), who finished a six-year MLB career in 1959 with the O’s.

On this day in 2016, the Orioles hit four home runs before making an out. Those homers came from Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Chris Davis, and Mark Trumbo. It was very exciting until Wade Miley blew the lead and the Orioles ended up losing to the Astros 15-8.
