Friday night Orioles game thread: vs. Rays, 7:05

Now that the home run record is taken care of, the Orioles can set their sights on evening up their series with Tampa Bay.

Last night wasn’t fun. It was rainy, the game took forever due to a delay, and the Orioles set a major league record for home runs allowed in a season. Boo.

But today’s a new day. And we and the Orioles must soldier on.

Today, it’s Ty Blach for Baltimore vs. Trevor Richards for Tampa Bay. Richards is one of the newest Rays, having come over at the trade deadline from Miami, where he was 3-12 with a 4.50 ERA.

So far with Tampa Bay he’s made one start, going 3.1 innings and allowing eight hits and two runs in a 5-4 win over Detroit on Aug. 18. Richards started the year well in Miami, pitching to a 3.31 ERA in his first 13 starts, but it’s been a different story from June 14 on. Over the eight starts and 11 appearances in that span, he’s 0-6 with a 6.64 ERA and .333 batting average against.

Meanwhile, Blach has been “blecch” with the Birds, pitching to a 10.61 ERA in two starts with the team since he was selected off waivers from the Giants on Aug. 3. He did, however, look all right in his last start against Boston; he allowed five runs in 5.1 innings, but had the Orioles in position to win before Brandon Hyde sent him out for the sixth.
