The Blue Jays come into Baltimore tonight for their penultimate series of the season against the O’s. In 13 games between these division rivals, the Orioles are 7-6 despite being outscored 53-66.

Oriole right-hander Chandler Shepherd — who was claimed off waivers from the Cubs back on May 22 — will make the first start of his major league career this evening. In 14 appearances with Triple-A Norfolk this year, including 12 starts, he was 3-5 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 3.17 SO/W. In seven innings out of the bullpen with the O’s, he has a 3.86 ERA, 3.07 FIP, 1.57 WHIP and 1.67 SO/W.

Toronto rookie Trent Thornton has owned the Orioles in three previous outings this year. In those starts, the right-hander allowed four runs in 17 total innings with a 1.06 WHIP and 11 strikeouts against only three walks. At Camden Yards, he has a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings.

Chris Davis is playing first base and batting eighth for the Orioles in this one. It’s only his fourth start this month and his first since September 11. Jonathan Villar is atop the order, continuing his trek toward 162 games played. Chance Sisco is batting ninth and he’s had a rough second half of the season, slashing .173/.283/.245 with a .528 OPS.
