The Orioles will face young Seattle left-hander Justus Sheffield in game two of their current series at Camden Yards. It will be his first career start against the the Birds.
Sheffield has thrown a combined 133 innings this year between Double-A and Triple-A, putting up a 7-9 record with a 4.13 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Seattle promoted him to the big league club on August 23, and in five games started since then he has a 5.32 ERA.
Sheffield has fared better against left-handed hitters in a small sample size with Seattle, holding them to a .185/.353/.444 batting line in 34 plate appearances. Righties are batting .341/.400/.512 against him in 90 plate appearances. Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde has opted to go with a lineup comprised entirely of right-handed hitters tonight, including a few switch-hitters.
The Orioles will send Asher Wojciechowski to the mound and hope they get the pitcher who showed up in his first handful of starts and not the more recent version. He had a decent July with a 3.60 ERA in six appearances, but then he put up a 6.75 ERA in August and so far in September his ERA is 6.43. If doesn’t look to be a matter of bad luck either, seeing as Wojo’s current FIP is 5.49. In 72 innings he has given up 16 home runs, which comes out to an average of 2.0 HR/9.
