Well, it didn’t take long for this season to get nutty.
An outbreak of the coronavirus on the Miami Marlins roster halted a series they were going to play with the Orioles in its tracks, and left the O’s instead looking for an opponent.
The search ended with the New York Yankees, who will be facing their division foes in a two-game set starting tonight at Camden Yards. New York was supposed to be playing Philadelphia, but that series was called off as the Phillies were the Marlins’ opponent last weekend.
It’ll be the first home games for the Orioles, who are coming off of a season-opening series victory against the Red Sox. Baltimore will give the ball to Asher Wojciechowski for the first time this summer; the 31-year-old right-hander went 4-8 with a 4.92 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 82.1 innings.
Getting the ball for the Yankees will be marquee free agent signing and Cy Young Award runner-up Gerrit Cole, who went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts for the Astros last year. He won his first start this season, going five innings against the Nationals and allowing one hit (a home run) while striking out five.
