Sunday afternoon Orioles game thread: vs. Red Sox, 1:05

The gloomy morning weather in Baltimore has given way to some sunshine, and the O’s have a shot to take one of three games in this series against Boston.

The Orioles enter the series finale today having dropped the past two games in a row to the Red Sox. You can check out Andrea SK’s recap of last night’s 6-4 loss here.

Jorge Lopez will tow the rubber for Baltimore this afternoon, and a solid start would go a long way in helping the Birds avoid a sweep. On April 5th against the Yankees, the right-hander allowed four runs in 4.2 innings, along with three hits, three walks, one home run, and five strikeouts. If you’re looking for a ray of hope, Lopez fared much better last year at Camden Yards versus on the road, with ERAs of 3.81 and 12.46, respectively.

Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta will be making his second start of the season. The first time around, he shut the Rays out over five innings, allowing only two hits but surrendering as many walks as strikeouts with four of each. Pivetta has faced the O’s three times in his career since 2018 and carries a 2.41 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 18.2 total innings.

The Birds will send out the same lineup as last night, except Pedro Severino is catching today and batting eighth, with shortstop Freddy Galvis batting ninth.
