Matt Harvey gets the nod this afternoon in Oakland as the Orioles look to extend their two-game winning streak. You can check out Alex Church’s recap of last night’s 3-2 series-opening victory against the Athletics here.
Five starts into his Orioles career, Harvey is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA, 3.27 FIP, 1.30 WHIP, and 3.50 SO/W. He earned the victory in his last start by throwing six innings of one-run ball against the Yankees.
This afternoon, the Athletics send 23-year-old left-hander Jesus Luzardo to the mound. Luzardo was originally a 2016 3rd round draft pick of the Nationals out of Stoneman-Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. He joined the A’s in 2017 as part of a three-player package from the Nationals in exchange for Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle.
Five starts into the 2021 season, the left-hander has a 5.40 ERA, 4.56 FIP, 1.52 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, and 10.4 SO/9. Back on April 25th, the Orioles scored three runs off Luzardo over the course of 6.2 innings. Austin Hays — who’s batting second in the lineup today — hit two home runs of Luzardo in that game, including a solo homer and a two-run shot. Luzardo allowed seven hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts in that outing as well.
Freddy Galvis makes his return to the Orioles lineup today, playing shortstop and batting 7th, after sitting out the past four games to rest a groin injury.
