Keegan Akin starts for the Orioles as the new era of cracking down on sticky substances begins in MLB.

This is gonna be tough. Our Orioles...let’s check the notes...are the worst team in the American League. The visiting Astros...checking notes once again...are the best team in the American League. It doesn’t look great on paper, but why not give it the ol’ college try. For more in-depth information on the series ahead check out Alex’s preview posted earlier today.

Something to watch tonight will be the inspection of pitchers by the umpires. The new rules regarding “sticky stuff” go into effect today. Starting pitchers will be checked at least twice during their outing (provided it lasts long enough) while relievers will be checked at least once. It’s gonna be pretty crappy if an O’s pitcher ends up as the first one popped for some sort of concoction on the mound.

What’s sure to happen, though, is that everyone will be happy with how the enforcement of the new rules is handled. There is no possible way that an umpire could mistake a legal rosin mixture for something that includes a more nefarious substance. Nope, no possible way for this to go poorly at all!
