Mired in a five-game losing streak, the O’s will hope to change their luck tonight against the displaced Toronto Blue Jays in upstate New York. These teams faced off less than a week ago at Camden Yards, with both ballclubs scoring the same number of runs in the series with 18 apiece. Yet the Jays took two out of three games.
Dean Kremer, who is on the bump tonight for the O’s, faced Toronto last Saturday in Baltimore when he had one of his better starts of the year. He allowed two runs, three hits, and three walks over six innings while recording six strikeouts. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Marcus Semien each hit a solo home run off Kremer.
The young right-hander’s ERA (6.20) and WHIP (1.48) through 11 starts may be unsightly, but in his past two outings, those numbers are 3.97 and 0.88, respectively.
The Blue Jays will send left-hander Anthony Kay to the mound for the series opener and funny enough, he pitched against the O’s last Saturday in Baltimore. After Toronto starter Alek Manoah was ejected for hitting Maikel Franco with a pitch, Kay pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs — on a pair of solo homers by Ryan Mountcastle and Cedric Mullins — and three hits with three strikeouts.
Splitting his time between the rotation (4 starts) and the bullpen (2 appearances) this season, Kay has a 5.87 ERA in 15.1 innings as a starter and a 7.94 ERA in 5.2 innings as a reliever.
