Orioles minor league recap 7/2: Norfolk uses long ball, knuckleball to gain victory, Rom goes the distance

Tyler Nevin, Seth Mejias-Brean and Zach Jarrett all went deep for Norfolk while Mickey Jannis started for the Tides. The IronBirds won a short one, and Delmarva was rained out.

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 7, Charlotte Knights (White Sox) 6

Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis started and allowed a pair of runs over four innings. Jannis allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out four on the evening. Shawn Armstrong replaced Jannis and allowed two runs in 1.1 innings. Futures Game selection Marco Diplán tossed 1.2 hitless innings and struck out two. Charlotte brought the tying run to third in the ninth, but Dusten Knight slammed the door shut to secure the victory.

Tyler Nevin got the Tides on the board with a solo homer in the fourth inning. Seth Mejias-Brean provided Norfolk the lead with a two-run shot, and Zach Jarrett added a solo blast of his own. Mason McCoy drove in Mejias-Brean with a single in the sixth, and Mejias-Brean plated Yusniel Díaz with a single in the seventh. Mejias-Brean and McCoy combined for four of Norfolk’s nine hits. Jahmai Jones finished 1-5, and Díaz finished 1-3 but also walked twice.

Double-A: Akron RubberDucks 12, Bowie Baysox 5

Bowie struck first with three runs in the top of the first, but managed only two more for the remainder of the game. The Baysox gained the early lead via an Earl Weaver special by Robert Neustrom. Neustrom finished 1-3 and also worked a walk. Patrick Dorrian reached base three times with a pair of hits and a walk. Kyle Stowers and Greg Cullen each drove in a run, and Adley Rutschman finished 0-4.

Gray Fenter started and allowed three runs in 3.2 innings. He struck out six, walked two and allowed a solo home run. Steven Klimek replaced Fenter and surrendered five runs. Kyle Brnovich pitched the final three innings and allowed four runs (three earned). Brnovich allowed five hits and struck out four. He did not walk a batter.

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 2, Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 0 F/6

The IronBirds were the only team to score in this rain shortened contest. J.D. Mundy ripped a leadoff double in the fourth inning and later scored on a ground out. Adam Hall drove in the only other run with a single to right field. Aberdeen won the game despite notching only three hits. Jordan Westburg added the only other hit and also earned a free pass. Gunnar Henderson finished 0-2.

Drew Rom started and pitched all six innings for Aberdeen. The former fourth-round pick allowed just four hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. He threw 78 pitches with 55 going for strikes. Rom moved to 5-0 on the year with a 3.14 ERA.

Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (Cleveland) PPD

The game was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on August 11.
