Following a 4-6 road trip and yesterday’s off day, the Orioles open a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Blue Jays.
Toronto will send Steven Matz to the mound this evening, and 14 starts into his first season with the Jays, the left-hander has a 4.60 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. Matz spent the second half of June on the Covid-19 injured list and looked rusty in his first game back when he allowed four runs in 2.2 innings.
Right-hander Spenser Watkins is making his first career start tonight for Baltimore. Watkins’ lone appearance since his June 30 promotion was a scoreless inning in relief against the Angels that included three fly ball outs.
In seven games with Norfolk this year, including six starts, Watkins put up a 3.58 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.
Maikel Franco was in the original O’s lineup, but he’s been scratched in favor of Domingo Leyba. Franco will be missed, considering his .538 batting average — including two home runs — in 13 career at-bats against Matz.
