Happy Monday, Camden Chatters! I hope your weekend was lovely and restful. It wasn’t so lovely or so restful for our beloved Orioles, who were swept by the Rays for what feels like the 20th time this season. They finally finished the season series against the Rays and ended up with an embarrassing 1-18 record against them.
Yesterday’s game was one of those frustrating games where the offense scored a lot of runs but the pitching just completely blew it. Poor Spenser Watkins looked to be headed to a decent outing before a sixth-inning blow up, which upset me. Why couldn’t they just pull him after five so he could go out on a high note?
Also completely falling apart is Paul Fry. He faced five batters and retired only one, ultimately giving up a grand slam. After yesterday’s game, both he and Watkins were optioned to the minors, which is particularly incredible for Fry. He was supposed to be one of the guys traded for prospects at the deadline! And now he’s in Triple-A!
If you’re looking for a silver lining about that 1-18 record against the Rays, the Orioles have four more wins against the Yankees this year than they do against the Rays. The Yankees are currently in second place, 6 games behind the Rays. So...the Orioles are just helping to do their part to keep the Yankees down? It’s weak, I know.
The rough schedule continues for the Orioles tonight as they start a series with the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are, at least, a a fourth-place team instead of a first-place team, but they are still 28 games ahead of the Orioles in the standings. There is still a lot of losing left to be done.

Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have one Orioles birthday buddy, but I bet it’s someone you don’t ever remember being an Oriole. Kris Foster turns 47 years old today. Foster appeared in seven games for the 2001 Orioles as a relief pitcher. He gave up one career home run which was hit by another former Oriole, Gregg Zaun.
On this day in 1958, Dick Williams played all three outfield positions for the Orioles but didn’t record a single putout or assist.
In 1969, the Orioles defeated the Angels 6-3. Merv Rettenmund knocked in three runs, but the best run was when Brooks Robinson singled and and then came around the bases to score on three passed balls. The three passed balls ties a record, but it’s the only time in the 20th century it has happened when the pitcher wasn’t Hoyt Wilhelm.
In 1996, Eddie Murray hit his 499th home run in a win by the Orioles that brought them to four games back of the Yankees. They gained eight games on the Yankees in a month, but unfortunately four back is also where they’d be when the season ended.
