Thursday Bird Droppings: Where we're draped in black about Nick Markakis, sorta

Your Thursday Orioles links include assorted Nick Markakis reactions and musings about what it might take to pry Matt Kemp from the Dodgers. Is that even a good idea?

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Hello, friends.

The offseason just got a little colder and a little longer, even though we've made it down to 123 days until Orioles Opening Day 2015. Whatever your feelings about the wisdom of a new contract for Nick Markakis, it's sad all the same that he will not be an Oriole any longer. I'll have to retire my Markakis jersey for a while, though I think it will come back in style. He was a great Oriole.

You've got three weeks left to do all of your Christmas shopping. How's that working out for you? It'd be easier for all of us if we could do our Christmas shopping like Dan Duquette and just find everything we need sitting around in the attic.

Here are some links from Birdland and elsewhere for your Thursday...

Steve Davis: Have Faith Orioles Fans " CBS Baltimore
105.7 The Fan personality Steve Davis wants to make sure Orioles fans keep having faith even though Nelson Cruz and Markakis are both gone. Thanks, Steve.

Can Orioles find another useful addition in Rule 5? | Comcast SportsNet Baltimore
No one has gotten more of a haul out of the Rule 5 draft in recent years than the Orioles. Is the next Ryan Flaherty waiting out there this year, and can Duquette be the one to draft him?

Matt Kemp market: Orioles, at least two others in, but at what price? -
Turns out the Orioles aren't THAT in on the Matt Kemp market, but Jon Heyman is here to try to assess what it might take for the Dodgers and some other team to make a deal involving Kemp.

Hardy on Markakis: "Everyone thought he'd be back" (Roch Kubatko)

Braves sign Nick Markakis to 4-year, $44 MM deal - Talking Chop
Our counterparts at the Braves blog come to grips with the addition of Markakis to their team. They don't seem very impressed so far.

Yankees rumors: Andrew Miller to New York may be more likely than David Robertson - Pinstripe Alley
And over on the Yankees blog, it looks like Andrew Miller could be the replacement for David Robertson in the Bronx. That would be quite a surprise, and unfortunate for us to see Miller more on another team.

Born on this day are a couple of former Orioles: Lee Smith, who closed for the 1994 team, and Stan Jefferson, an outfielder whose short stint spanned 1989-90.

This is also the day in 1988 on which the Orioles traded Eddie Murray to the Dodgers. A better trade on this day came in 1973, when the Expos and Orioles swapped five players, including Ken Singleton heading to Baltimore.

And that's the way it is in Birdland on December 4 - or at least, until something happens later. Have a safe Thursday.
